I really wanted to save this old faux tortoise handle. Loved the material and the shape. But when it comes to salvaging a knot, especially one that's not yours and costs $110, you really need to make sure you get it out in one piece. IME, the only way to do that with no risk of completely ruining the badger knot, is to cut it out of the old handle. This means completely trashing the original handle.

I have tried steaming a ShaveMac out before, and the results where not good. When I removed the knot from the handle, all the epoxy stayed, and all the hair came out. I was able to salvage it in the long run, but it wasn't something I could use in someone elses handle due to some imperfections. That knot ended up in my Thuya/Ebony with ivory button brush.

I don't have to 3m stuff Mike has but I take 3k trizact and mothers for just a bit more help and it makes a difference then I will go back with just a rag and mothers.

Me, spending some time on these, going grit and elbow grease as I am in no hurry.

Happy that nasty discoloration is gone from mid blade on the rattler,, was quite deep. Now to clean up the tang some more carefully.

And this ones Spanish toe came back nicely, even though I cropped it in the picture. Now it's all about saving the etch.while I clean up the rest. Looks like it was a true wedge to me, and double jimps that also are cleaning up well..

Looking good Mike, I was in the same boat a few months ago when I did this one. Here's a "before" picture and you can see the same etch. Also, like yours, the "I AM" part of it was stamped light. I used the same approach, careful, slow and by hand. Those two are going to be really awesome! I'm staying tuned...

Good stuff happinin here fellas, definitely take your time Mike, its overwhelming and taxing at times, right up to the last strike in the pins, but oh so rewarding in the end.
I can't even phathom how many hours I spent cleaning up the Packwood the first time, and months went by once I started a total restore, scales included.

Personally, I am looking better after some antibiotics after a swollen face from an infected, busted tooth last week.
Here we go again at the dentist...Money Money. Pain, pain!

We DO get next Monday off, however.

Spent several hours to-day getting off boxes to Canada and Ohio.
Takes me forever to get things done, it seems! Looking forward to some sort of normalcy soon!
