Thread: The Butchered Blade

Progess made today..
Started on the shorty Diamond Edge today.

Removed scales, saving all components, and amputated the broken toe.

Cleaned the blade up as much as possible (lots of pitting), using greaseless compounds and dremmel at slow speed, and hand sanding with 600 W/D paper.

Buff the blade w/ dremmel using felt pad and cr/ox, then rag wheel and flitz.
Pinned blade in set of used scales so to see if will take a clean bevel.

Some may say , set bevel first.
But if it does... All the hard work is done, and i wont have to reset the bevel again. Just get it in new shoes , and hone.

Just came up off the rocks, to take a little break.
Looks like it will take a bevel, looking thru magnification. But a small window between a couple pits exists.
If i can remove what's left of the first one without getting int the other all's good. If not I'll have to remove about another 64th of an inch off the edge.

Those are another good brand of American straights except mine doesn't say D 39. Looks like I have the same one. I have a couple more Shapleigh's.

Actually German made, and distributed thru Shapliegh Hardware Co.

I've achieved a clean bevel, and lifted the toe to create a smile.
Honed up this morning, will test shave for final results later today.

Worked a bit on the makers mark, guess that's it! Tried also to restore the etching on the face, but that's not happening with my simple approach of creating patina with FeCl3 and polishing the extras away, since the etching is not deep enough. Gonna need some thought....

No razor work for me tonight. My youngest totalled my avalanche this morning driving home in some thick fog. He, and the person he hit are both ok. Vehicles, nope.

Sitting with a drink mourning the loss of the nicest truck I ever owned, even as I'm truly relieved that that's all I am mourning. Truck did it's job and kept him safe.

Thanks Mike, been working on that heel tonight, but nothing interesting to share.. I can say the same - no razor worked for me either and my car is wrecked, too (but still drives), so had a full day at the mechanic today with the insurance person of the guy who hit me, trying to sway me to accept less than perfect coverage.

Condolences for the loss of your avalanche, but thankfully the people got out safe. Always the bright side, hey!
