Thanks! Not bad for an overweight, former smoker, eh?

Five miles is on the short side lately. I registered for a trail half-marathon in October so my runs are getting longer. On Sunday I did @8 miles on the trail and will bump it up to 9 miles this coming Sunday.

Weather was perfect, started around 14c, was about 21c at the finish. Little bit of chafing, and overall soreness after, but was happy. I knew I had no idea how my body would react past the 4 hour mark, so I did all I could to fuel, hydrate and roll/stretch beforehand, and it worked out. No bonk at the wall, but I could definitely tell when the glycogen started running out, pushed through and felt strong at the end.
    Congrats and well done.

It's always nice to not bonk on a marathon.

Thanks, gonna rest up for a week or so, then going hiking for a few days and then getting ready for a 50 miler in September.

That's a large jump from a Marathon to 50 miler!!

A mate of mine told me this afternoon that he's giving up his entry for a 50km trail run next month. Would have loved to have gone back to do it again (ran it in 2008 with my mate) but nowhere near fit enough at the moment.

The 50 miler is basically an idea that a couple of us hatched, so its not an actual race. Well, it is, sort of, but we are kind making the rules as we go. The idea is to do it in 12 hours, but if it takes longer then it takes longer.

Basically, Edmonton has the largest urban park system in North America in it's river valley, so the idea is to do a lap of it, start on the east end, go as far west as we can and cross, then return on the opposite shore. Mapped out on Google it was about 78km. All within the city limits. I think it's crazy that there is that much park inside the city. How many cities can you do that in?

    Yesterday's workout

    Dead lift 160, 170, 180, 190 kg x 5
Standing bent over barbell rows 75 kg x8 x4
Bench bent over db rows 37.5 kg x8 x4
Narrow grip pull down 55 kg x 8 x4 done at double speed(sets not reps)

No mistakes all as I lift. All 6ft 100kg of me. Although I could stand to lose 5 or so of those so I can see abs. Haven't seen them in a while

Johannesburg has a similar park system which runs along a small river called the Braamfontein Spruit
I can leave my house and run close to 50km with doing less than 2km on tar.
The run encompasses Alberts Farm (which is my local Parkrun), the Johannesburg Botannical Gardens and Delta Park (another Parkrun).

No need. Lock out at top of deads gives plenty of trap work especially on the last few sets

This evening I went on a 5.5 mile trail run with the antelope group. I got dropped going up the first big hill. Halfway through I was fighting nausea and had to stop twice. Once that business was over I rallied and finished the last 1.5 miles running. Success!
