One of these days I'll get around to making a set of scales like that. I've got 7 different projects going on now, and with boating season coming on strong, finding less time to get them accomplished. Might have to put the machine gun away, and pull out the semi auto, or the trusty pump action. [emoji5]

Tonight's razor wasn't much fun. A NOS Boker that took me 2 freaking hours to get the bevel set. I started out on a 1200 stone and soon saw that my progress wasn't going very far so I dropped down to an 800. It went pretty good then slowed way down. I got mad and dropped down to a 200 for 10 no pressure laps then went back to the 800 and 1200. It finally started to cut leg hair in a couple of spots on the blade so I did a pyramid progression between the 800 and 1200 cleaning and re-lapping the stones till it cut leg hair full length of the blade. After that I finished up with a good 200 laps on my cousin's Thuringian and stropped the SNOT out of the thing. It now tree tops arm hair and gets a test shave tomorrow with the Bismarck and Double Duck #1.

As a side note---> You guys must have the patience of Job to do this everyday. I can't wait until I'm done with this project so I can shave with my own razors again.

The term 'NOS' is so loosely tossed around at times. I have a Wilbert Cultery that was given to me by an old friend. While it wasn't in the original packaging, there were no signs of honing so I could have considered it NOS, but I dont'. It's just a really nice old razor that shows no signs of usage.

A few years before you joined there was an informative thread about what NOS means and not only about Straight Razors. I found it very informative at the time and still do. Check it out.

As far as the time it takes to get a razor honed. Sometimes it takes Days of working, then setting aside and then starting again. There's no 'money' in honing, only personal satisfaction and being able to help others.

I'll have to count them again but IIRC there are 5 of these razors that have never seen a hone or a whisker. Having restored two antique cars, NOS parts means to me new original parts from that particular time period in their original boxes that probably came from an old dealership warehouse. That's my take on NOS.

I'm not charging my cousin to do this. It's my way of getting him on the right track to decent shaving. My payment is the satisfaction I'll get when I see his smile. Do it for anyone else?...........not on your life. Honing is a pain in the butt and I have enough razors of my own to keep up.

Yep. Roy speaks the truth. New guys need to realize the just because you HAVE a hone, does not mean you need to use it.

Just a bit on a rough hone will start you from (most times!) dead, minus, scratch! (pun intended!)

Show us pictures of these razors. Pictures, or it didn't happen.

I'm certainly not new to honing. Been doing my own razors since I was 14. I don't have a digital camera. At almost 60 years old, I don't plan on buying one and learning how to use it. So.... pictures or it didn't happen? Well, you guys will have to take my gentleman's word of honor on it. Up here where I live we still take a man's word and seal a deal with a handshake.

Well, electronic handshakes are difficult. I suppose we'll settle for film prints mailed to each of us. 1 roll per razor
    jmercer and AlanQ like this.

Well....A picture IS worth a thousand words, you know.
Most of us are as old as you and much older. If you can navigate this forum, hunt and peck, you can get a cheap camera and post some pics.

    WE shall help you!
