yeah! Maybe a lite coat of CA to penatrate, sand and apply the rod finish,..... that should work!

Another i thought of, but it takes a bit of time to build the layers for that deep wet look, may be great for this burl is.

Tru Oil gun stock finish....

Restored a couple of gun stocks with that , but is it tough, takes a beatin, briar patches barley scratch it. If it does, it will polish right out.

Thanks Mike, I wrote it down, gonna find some and try it out (Flex Coat), sounds like great stuff.
Ill let you pave the way with the Tru Oil...

I often do most of a blade by hand including the tang. It's the easiest part. I have paper mounted on wood so I can keep the lines straight and crisp. It never takes long!

Today I realized a couple things.
1. Im really no good at drilling out pins and removing blades. Please tell me the special tricks. My bits are the ones meant to prevent wandering, but they heat up and melt the scales if plastic. And still slips off pin to gouge scales.. Im great at some things and suck at others.
2. I need to get better at pinning. Practice I guess, But I sat there and tapped this pivot pin forever and could not get it any tighter... not tight enough. Sometimes no problem.. sometimes just wont get any tighter. I dont want to force it.

Anyway, looking good, man dont you hate when a tiny little piece of grit gets on the cloth! ugh!

Mike maybe your pins are too long when you start.
Make sure your hitting near the edge of the pin, you want it to mushroom, if you hit more to center it becomes a expanding wedge. Shure to split something.

I was waiting for Tom to show his drill chuck mounted on a fork tube. He does his with one end finished before he puts it on the razor. I have been trying to follow him with that.

Okay thanks a lot for the tips. Ill stop trying to drill and simply use the file method.. That sounds more my way of things.
I have this two piece block with holes of various sizes in it. I put a pin in and get it just right, loosen the two blocks (bolts), and its ready to go in the scales, I like it, not necessary ofcourse.
Mike Outbacks anvil he sent me is helping tremendously! My attempts were not good before, getting better. Practice practice.
Here are my next projects. Today I spent considerable time hand sanding, need more work. I missed some little pits and havent done the tangs much.

Edit: Dang it I forgot before pics. Well they were not too bad to begin with, perhaps better put on a different thread...?

Edit: I also started doing most of the work by hand. But it takes me a long time. How do you go fast? Seems the wheels are faster but I cant put the same quality out with wheels, by hand Ive become much more confident. Now I rarely go to the wheels except at the end if at all.

Some blades go fast, othrs don't.
Your doing just fine mike.
It's the anticipation that makes it seem to take forever.
