Several weeks ago I bought this 7 day ivory Mappin and Webb set to restore, and finally I finished it up today! Thanks to all of you that helped me with my ivory pinning I didn't want to lose or lighten the etch too much so I polished by hand. This, of course, left some stained areas (and sore hands) but overall the set turned out great IMO.

Thanked: 4206Spent some time finishing the set up on the micro lathe and tested out the speed control.
Initially this mdf board will do, but I will be keeping an eye out for aluminum plate at work to make a proper work surface. The entire rig then sits on top of one of my rolling tool chests.
Still waiting on my carbide turning bits etc. but happy to get this operational finally.
Cheers gents."Depression is just anger,, without the enthusiasm."

Thanked: 4827Mike, for touching up your carbide tools, do you lap them on felt and diamond paste? I bought some diamond lapidary plates and put them on my work sharp chisel sharpener for my HSS steel chisels, and lap them with a leather strop and chromium oxide on the same machine. I suppose it would work like a charm for any flatfish chisels. I am most curious bout your plan for your carbide.

Nice set up with the micro lathe Mike and thanks for posting some about the bullet brush, such a cool brush when finished.
Very nice work on the 7 day set, Ernie! I hear ya about the sore hands but sometimes there is just no substitute. In the end, I've never regretted doing more by hand and less by machine. Great looking set, enjoy it with pride."Go easy"

Thanked: 4206Thanks gents.
Yessir Shaun I use felt on board and .25 micron diamond spray on the non replaceable carbide bits. Prefer the rotate and replace ones these days..
Ordered both for this rig. I will save the replaceable tipped tools for steel work, use the others for wood, plastic, shell, etc.
You can give this new taig rig a spin next summer Andrew, decide if you want one in the future as well.
