Thanked: 3215Yup, my Ace hardware has a good selection, a 2 inch D ring works great.
If you need a shorter Chicago screw, just file or grind the screw or the backing side. Probably just touching them to a grinder or sanding belt will get you there.
You can also drill a hole in a paint stick, or stack of popsicle sicks, poke the screw through and file it down as needed.

Thanked: 3215Pick up a bag of Popsicle sticks, tongue depressor sticks, coffee stir stick, bamboo chop sticks and skewers, from a dollar or craft store, they are only a buck or two, they come in handy for a variety of tasks.
Make great stir sicks, clipped off on one end, or spacers for project mock-ups and can be shaped for scraping, and sanding with sand paper glued to them.
A piece of cardboard and a clipped coffee stir stick will mix a small batch of epoxy neatly and can be tossed in the trash with no cleanup or guilt of waste.

Thanked: 481I've got the D rings, just left them at home. Now that I think about it, I've got a bag full of popsicle sticks too. I don't remember why I have them though.
I did consider modification of the screws. Still not off the table, but I need dedicated screws first. The ones in the photo were borrowed from the SRD strop, so they're going back in their home as soon as I get the linen replacement in.

Thanked: 481(Mostly) Final product:
Searched a hardware store and a hobby shop, was disappointed to find that neither had Chicago Screws in stock. But the hardware store did have some cheap brass washers. I'll be going back tomorrow for another pack so I can slip that last screw in there, but it's functional in the mean time and has Chrome Ox drying on it as I write this. Have to say I'm pretty happy with how it turned out.

Thanked: 4827I have a set of screwdrivers just like the one on your counter.
It's nice when it all comes together and you have just what you wanted. It should work. It's not what you know, it's who you take fishing!

The strop looks fantastic! There's a lot of work that goes into making it look nice and finished like that. Nice job!

I've been watching this and had to add my two cents.
I wanted to try another type of strop, and being I could buy replacement strops for my SRD strop that are considerably cheaper, I just removed the handle from the webbing and attached it to the new strop, then removed the top screws and sandwiched them back together with the same screws.
So this gives me two strops, and one clean side and one cr/ox side to the webbing.
Thought this may give you some ideas.
.
How do I use the webbing, you ask.!
I've rigged up a rope to attach to a towel rack, it gives me the room to flip the other strop, up out of the way without creasing or folding the leather.

Thanked: 481I was wondering if anyone would catch on to what that was doing there...
outback - that's a pretty neat trick. Almost wish I'd thought of it. Well, now I've got a neat little standalone. I'm kicking around the idea of adding diamond to the backside. But I'm also pretty sure I wouldn't like that as much in practice as I do in theory. Probably the kind of thing I'd only use for pocket knives or something of that nature.
