Thread: Hone of the Day

I forgot I had his little brother too,posing with a Tornblom razor.

Gave this Otto Busch a quick touch up ( 4-8-12 ) then about 75 or so strokes on this small LV with just a hint of slurry then 25 laps on plain water and stropped

Engstrom razor stamped Little Valley,NY honed on natural combo in walnut carved box.

I touched up a shave ready Boker using Aaron's dry to thick progression as he's described elsewhere.
The sequence went as described and the whole session took about 20 minutes.
Some thoughts I had on this method:
--the razor had been recently touched up only on the trans and was shaving smoothly. I had finished it on a crox pasted strop as I usually do.
--the dry honing is what sets this method apart and I think where the magic happens (like the bevel set); you can feel the smoothing out and it happens quickly. Once there it is an enjoyable feel to the stone. This step will be the future bridge between my hard ark and my trans.
--honing under the faucet was a little nerve racking at first as I was free handing it -and had to get used to the position. Quickly it became a joy. The razor quickly sucked down on the stone and I added the dish soap and continued with this with the lightest strokes. Really enjoyable experience in hand.
--After drying the Boker I was struck by the bevel shine; it was different than the hazy looking bevels I always get with my Arks. It was bright and polished much like the bevels I've had from a 12 k synthetic (but not That polished). It was striking.
--I use Dan's honing oil and this step went as usual. I actually think the shine on the bevel was not as pronounced after this step but that could be my imagination.
--I did not strop it on the crox pasted strop; went straight to leather.
--Hanging hair test was impressive.
I'm really looking forward to tomorrows shave.

Paul-I'm really interested in hearing how this shaves for you, as I feel like I'm still learning and tweaking this technique myself. Funny how Kelbro said he does the exact opposite (thick to thin?) and gets excellent results, so it is entirely possible that I'm full of s8%t.

But honestly, I think that if you have your stroke down pat on a smooth, well-burnished Arkie in the higher SG range, it may not matter that much which way you go-I could be wrong.

By the way, that's a beautiful translucent-now I've got to dust mine off and throw it into this recipe! Please report back on the shave-I just finished my favorite razor, a Frederick Reynolds rattler grind on this regimen, and plan to try it tomorrow.

Being still new on the Arkie, I found thin to thick worked better for me. But maybe a more burnished stone will work differently than my newer one.

Gasman, your wooden scales are always gorgeous. Could you find the time and post some pics showing the steps you use, especially when applying the final finish?
